Practical guide
How to share a DICOM study or PDF without the patient name
Choose the output the recipient needs: a PDF or image to show a view, or an anonymized DICOM copy to reopen the study. In Ossidex, hiding the patient name in a report and anonymizing a DICOM export are different actions. Check the exported artifact before sending it: text embedded in image pixels can still identify a patient.
Choose the output first
| Recipient needs | Output | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| A selected view or measurements | Image or PDF report | Rendered output is not the original DICOM volume. |
| To scroll the study in a viewer | Anonymized DICOM export | Check images, metadata and source completeness before sharing. |
| The complete original clinical export | The authorised source export | Removing identifiers changes the copy; do not silently substitute it for an identified clinical record. |
Export, inspect, then send
- Select the study and view. Confirm that you are exporting the intended study. For a report, set the view and measurements you want the recipient to see.
- Choose the matching export. For a PDF report, turn off the patient-name option when appropriate. For a study copy, choose the anonymized export in the viewer’s export controls. Wait until export completes.
- Inspect the result. Open the PDF or exported copy. Check filenames, visible labels, free-text notes, attachments and the images themselves. Removing DICOM identifiers cannot automatically erase names burned into pixels.
- Use the intended sharing channel. Send only the reviewed artifact to the intended recipient, following your organisation’s handling rules. Keep your original study separately.
What anonymization does not promise
Do not treat a hidden report name as complete DICOM de-identification, or assume every source file is free of identifying content. The DICOM confidentiality profiles distinguish identifying attributes from other information, including the image contents. Ossidex’s export option is not a claim that every possible dataset meets every confidentiality profile. Export is free within the current Free limits; unlimited export requires Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Does a screenshot remove the patient’s identity?
No. It can retain visible labels or text inside the image. Inspect it before sharing.
Can the recipient reconstruct the volume from my PDF?
No. Send an appropriate DICOM copy if the recipient needs the slice data and geometry.
